Educational Supports for Mixed Cerebral Palsy Children There are mixed forms of Cerebral Palsy. There are even some patients that commonly have mixed Cerebral Palsy. The most common is a combination of spasticity and athetoid, but there are also other combinations.

Under mixed Cerebral Palsy, both voluntary movement and muscle tone are affected. Mixed Cerebral Palsy is somewhat complicated than the regular and common Cerebral Palsy.

Children with mixed Cerebral Palsy or any other type of Cerebral Palsy have learning disabilities. But this doesn’t mean that they should not attend school. There are schools which specialize for Cerebral Palsy children.

Children with mixed Cerebral Palsy should also start education at an early age to reduce handicapping effects. Their communication skills and mobility will greatly improve if they undergo the ‘early intervention’ program.

They should attend school together with their peers and receive integrated education. A child may have a mild or severe disability. This usually depends on which type of Cerebral Palsy the child is diagnosed with, these children need considerable support from their parents, the teaching assistants and resource staffs.

Children with Cerebral Palsy who attends these education programs have IEP or individualized education plan which assess their performance, goals and the needed supports. But usually varies from school to school. Parents and the school staff should be good partners in order for their children to reach certain goals.

The ultimate goal of this education programs is ‘realistic independence’.

Even children with mixed Cerebral Palsy should not be deprived of independent living. They should learn how to communicate well with other people, possess certain skills or potentials, and gain new friends.

Community barriers between the normal children and those with mixed Cerebral Palsy nowadays are not that evident anymore due to social policy makers. Even people with mixed Cerebral Palsy should be allowed to take part in the activities of the community.
