Living With an Ataxic Cerebral Palsy-Person
There are four types of cerebral palsy, and ataxic cerebral palsy is one of them. A person who has ataxic cerebral palsy has low muscle tone and their movements have poor coordination. They usually appear shaky and unsteady.
This type of cerebral palsy is quite rare in form as it affects depth perception and the sense of balance. Affected persons walk unsteadily and their feet are unusually far apart; they also shake a lot (like that of older persons) especially when they are trying to hold or handle a thing or an object.
About 5-10% of children diagnosed with cerebral palsy are affected by ataxic cerebral palsy.
So what is it like living in the same household with an ataxic CP person? If a member of your family is diagnosed with ataxic cerebral palsy, you should help him/her to cope up with handicaps and disabilities. These two words have entirely different meanings.
Disability is defined as the physical-loss of function while a handicap is the extent to which that certain disability put you in a disadvantage. CP is not considered as a life-threatening condition. So there is no reason for you to treat your family member with CP as if he/she is worthless. In fact, there are those who live a productive and have satisfying careers in life.
To minimize handicap effects, let your family member with Cerebral Palsy undergo therapy or surgery. Let them also gain access to educational opportunities, recreational facilities and meet new friends. And most specially, don’t pity them; let them live a normal life.
Teasing and prejudice can cause further damage to their already weary state. Build their self-esteem and self-confidence. You will not live forever and be always at their side…… don’t let them become too dependent on you. Let them live their own life. Time will come that they will thank you for your efforts.
